Which surfboard should you buy?

Do you know that choosing the right surfboard for your skill level is a determining factor in your progress?

Depending on your skill and experience, the types of surfboards you will need are different.

An experienced surfer, who will generally use small surfboards that allow for more agile and fluid surfing, is different from a beginner surfer, who needs a more stable and easier-to-surf beginner board.

Which beginner surfboard should you buy?

The best surfboards for beginners are those that have good paddling power and enough stability to make it easier to stand up and ride the wave.

Within this group of beginner surfers, we must distinguish between: those who are total novices and those who have already mastered the take-off and are starting to ride waves along the face.

For the former, the most recommended are

Soft-top surfboards

Also known as softboards or foam surfboards, they are without a doubt the best option for starting out.

These types of boards are the most used in surf schools, both for the safety they provide to beginner surfers and because they greatly facilitate learning the basic fundamentals of surfing, such as paddling and standing up.

The soft material they are made of prevents injury in case of impact, which is very common in the early stages of learning.

Their longboard-style shape with a rounded nose and thick rails makes it easier to catch waves and perform the take-off. Once standing, they are very stable for becoming familiar with the sensations of gliding over the water.

Once the basics are mastered, it is time to progress and start performing your first turns on the wave face. For this, the best option is

Evolutive Surfboards

They are called "evolutives" because their function is precisely to bridge the gap from a foam surfboard to what we colloquially call a "fiberglass surfboard."

These are surfboards of approximately 7 feet that maintain a wide nose and good length but have refined characteristics—such as the rails, tail, or rocker—to start making the first turns and riding waves with more fluidity.

They generally have less volume than the previous ones to make them more agile when surfing, but they still maintain good paddling power to catch a large number of waves.

A cheap evolutive surfboard that is a bestseller in our store is the Full and Cas Cyclone. With plenty of paddle power and enough stability to progress quickly in your surfing, it is the evolutive board we recommend the most.

Halfway between a professional surfboard and an evolutive surfboard are Mid Lengths like the Firewire Sunday. With a similar length, their features offer higher performance for a wider range of surfers.

Which surfboard should an expert buy?

More experienced surfers are capable of surfing with a very wide range of boards.

Depending on individual preferences, there is a large selection of surfboards for surfers who have mastered the basic skills. All of them have in common that they offer higher performance than the softboards or evolutive surfboards we have seen before.

Generally, professional surfboards or shortboards are shorter, lighter, and more sensitive, allowing for more aggressive and powerful surfing.

Among the most outstanding high-performance models for this season are:

  • Slater Designs FRK
  • Firewire Dominator 2
  • Al Merrick Two Happy
  • Tomo SCI FI 2.0

But in addition to these high-performance boards, expert surfers also have many other options without the need to use such demanding boards.

Fish surfboards or retro Christenson surfboards offer excellent performance and addictive speed for an increasing number of expert surfers.

Take a look around our website, where you will find Funboards, Twin Fins, and all kinds of boards, from the top brands to cheap surfboards. And if we don't have it, we will try to get it or have it custom-made for you.

Still have questions about which surfboard to buy? You will find more information in our BLOG.

Which surfboard should you buy based on weight and height?

Once you have decided on the type of surfboard you need, it is time to choose the right surfboard size, and for that, two of the determining factors besides surf level are weight and height.

The task of choosing the right surfboard size has become much easier in recent years thanks to the use of volume.

What is surfboard volume?

Volume is the total amount of space the board occupies, expressed in liters, and it mainly affects its buoyancy.

The greater the buoyancy, the easier it will be to catch waves and surf softer faces, but as a trade-off, the board loses responsiveness.

How many liters do I need in my surfboard?

The only rule that exists for this is that the heavier you are and the lower your technique, the larger the dimensions and volume of your board should be, and vice versa.

Our recommendation is that in case of doubt, always go for more. A board with less volume than you need, even if it is more agile once you are surfing, will make it much harder for you to catch waves and will make you tire more easily when paddling.

How much does a surfboard cost?

Beginner softboards cost between 200 and 300 euros.

The price of cheap surfboards that do not skimp on material quality is around €400.

Professional surfboards start at €700.

But surely you have wondered why there is a difference in the prices of surfboards.

Well, their price is influenced by factors such as:

  • The type and quality of the materials used in their manufacture. As a general rule, an Epoxy surfboard is more expensive than those made of polyester resin, which are usually cheap surfboards.
  • The design is another fundamental point regarding the price of a surfboard. The top brands rely on world-class surfers to test their designs and the best shapers to craft them.

At Core Surfing Shop, you will find a wide variety of boards for every budget:

Cheap surfboards like the Full and Cas or Core surfboards made in Spain with high-quality materials are fiberglass surfboards that meet the needs of the vast majority of surfers.

And Epoxy surfboards like Firewire surfboards, manufactured using the most modern processes and materials, are at the forefront in terms of the performance of their designs.
