When Dan Mann was first commissioned to make a surfboard for Kelly Slater, the idea of what board he was going to design came to him immediately. 

After many years of watching Kelly Slater surf and making surfboards, I was very clear about the surfboard I was going to make: the outline, the rocker, the rails, and the tail shape all came to my mind quickly. It might be the most intuitive board I have ever designed. -Dan Mann-

The result couldn't have been better, and the Slater Designs FRK - "The FReaK" - became one of the best-selling High Performance surfboards from Firewire Surfboards. Proof of this is that year after year it remains in their catalog and is a favorite among their professional surfers.

FEATURES OF THE SLATER DESIGNS FRK IBOLIC

Something that stands out about the Firewire FRK is its clean curves, without elements that break the aesthetics of traditional surfboards. 

OUTLINE

It appears to have less volume than it actually does, due to its narrow tail and nose, as well as its really thin rails.

But the Slater Designs FRK has a good amount of volume "hidden" in the center of the board to offer good buoyancy without compromising performance. 

With the widest point slightly forward, it ensures enough paddle power for when the waves demand it.

ROCKER

A medium rocker has been introduced in the Slater Designs FRK, both at the entry and the exit.

With a continuous curve without any flat spots on the board, it adapts to the curve of the waves it is designed for without the surfer feeling anything strange, allowing them to perform their best surfing. 

The rocker designed for the Firewire FRK has produced excellent results, which is why it has been used with slight modifications on other Dan Mann boards like the Dominator 2 and the Mashup in collaboration with Machado.

CONCAVES

Single concave, which transitions to a double concave in the last third of the board.

A concave configuration that works very well on High Performance boards by combining good speed and drive with fast rail-to-rail transitions.

RAILS

The rails of the Slater Designs FRK are really thin. In fact, when holding it in your hands, it will seem like it has less volume than it actually does. 

This type of rail makes the board very sensitive in direction changes and allows it to dig in excellently in all maneuvers where you use the rail, no matter how fast you are going.

TAIL

A narrow and slim round tail to give us the drive and grip we need in quality waves. 

Taking into account that this Kelly Slater board is designed to surf quality waves, it is not convenient to have too much volume in the tail so that the board responds as we want it to. 

Most of the speed will be provided by the wave, so we need a tail that gives us confidence in vertical sections, with an instantaneous and secure response.

FINS

The Firewire FRK can be used as a Thruster or Quad. 

With 3 fins, you will gain Drive, so it is recommended to use this configuration in waves where you primarily need to carve.

In quad, the board will be faster and have more grip in more vertical waves.

We have seen Kelly Slater use it in both configurations with the Endorfins 5-fin set.

RECOMMENDATION AND OPINIONS ON THE FIREWIRE FRK

This Slater Designs surfboard is designed for intermediate/advanced surfers who are used to surfing with High Performance boards. 

One of the things that surprised us the most about the Firewire FRK is the great paddle power it has for a board of its characteristics, one of the main reasons for its success. 

If you regularly use these types of boards, you will know that a deficit in paddling can cause you to discard a board no matter how well it performs on the wave.

When conditions improve and the waves are really good, you need that extra speed to get into the wave early. 

Once on the wave, the Slater Designs FRK is a very sensitive board, where you must place your feet correctly and make weight shifts properly to get the most out of it. 

That is why we recommend it for surfers who have a good level of surfing and want to squeeze the most out of it in quality waves.

- Super light 1.5 lb EPS foam (680 grams) 

- Central stringer on the deck and bottom laminated with fiberglass that combines flex and strength

- Wood on the Helium's parabolic rails is replaced by high-density foam. 

- Laminated in Epoxy and 4 OZ fiber, two layers on the bottom and one on the deck, to which a 3mm layer of the same compound used in Helium technology is added.
