When Dan Mann was first commissioned to make a surfboard for Kelly Slater, the idea of what board he was going to design immediately came to mind.

After many years of watching Kelly Slater surf and making surfboards, it was very clear to me what kind of surfboard I was going to make: the outline, the rocker, the rails, and the tail shape all came to my mind quickly. It might be the most intuitive board I have ever designed. -Dan Mann-

SLATER DESIGNS FRK IBOLIC FEATURES

Something that stands out about the Firewire FRK is its clean lines, without any elements that break the aesthetics of traditional surfboards.

OUTLINE

It appears to have less volume than it actually has at first glance, due to its narrow tail and nose, as well as its very fine rails.

But the Slater Designs FRK has a good amount of volume "hidden" in the center of the board to offer good buoyancy without compromising performance.

With the widest point slightly forward, it ensures enough paddling power for when the waves demand it.

ROCKER

A medium rocker has been introduced in the Slater Designs FRK, both at the entry and the exit.

It features a continuous curve without any flat spots on the board, to adapt to the curve of the waves for which it is designed, ensuring the surfer does not feel anything unusual and can perform at their best.

The rocker designed for the Firewire FRK has yielded excellent results, which is why it has been used with slight modifications in other Dan Mann boards, such as the Dominator 2 and the Mashup in collaboration with Machado.

CONCAVES

Single concave, transitioning to a double concave in the last third of the board.

A concave configuration that works very well on High Performance boards by combining good speed and drive with quick rail-to-rail transitions.

RAILS

The Slater Designs FRK rails are very fine. In fact, when you hold it in your hands, it will seem to have less volume than it actually does.

These types of rails make the board very sensitive in directional changes and it bites excellently in all maneuvers where you use the rail, no matter how fast you are going.

TAIL

A narrow and thin round tail to provide the drive and hold we need in quality waves.

Considering that this Kelly Slater board is designed for surfing quality waves, it is not convenient to have too much volume in the tail so that the board responds as we want.

Most of the speed will be provided by the wave, so we need a tail that gives us confidence in vertical sections and has an instant and secure response.

FINS

The Firewire FRK can be ridden as a Thruster or Quad.

With 3 fins you will gain Drive, so it is recommended to use this configuration in waves where you mainly need to carve.

In a quad setup, the board will be faster and have more grip in steeper waves.

We have seen Kelly Slater use it in both configurations with the Endorfins 5-fin set.

FIREWIRE FRK RECOMMENDATION AND OPINIONS

This Slater Designs surfboard is designed for intermediate/advanced surfers, accustomed to surfing with High Performance boards.

One of the things that surprised us most about the Firewire FRK is the great paddling power it has for a board of its characteristics, one of the main reasons for its success.

If you regularly use this type of board, you will know that a lack of paddling power is something that can make you discard a board, no matter how well it works on the wave.

When conditions improve and the waves are really good, you need that extra speed to catch the wave early.

Once on the wave, the Slater Designs FRK is a very sensitive board, where you must place your feet correctly and shift your weight properly to get the most out of it.

That is why we recommend it for surfers who have a good level of surfing and want to squeeze the most out of it in quality waves.

- Super light 1.5 lb (680 grams) EPS foam

- Central springer on the deck and bottom laminated with fiberglass that combines flex and strength

- Replacing the wood in the Helium parabolic rails with high-density foam.

- Laminated in Epoxy and 4 oz fiberglass, two layers on the bottom and one on the deck, to which a 3mm layer of the same compound used in Helium technology is added.
